Yes, You Can Use Spot Colors in Photoshop

Make It Ready for Press

When you deliver your Photoshop file to your commercial printer, you’ll need to do a few more things to make the printing go smoothly.

  1. Save a copy of your file just for the press. You will be making drastic changes to this copy.
  2. Throw away any unused channels: right-click on the channel and select Delete Channel. I deleted my RGB channel, which deleted the separate R, G and B channels with it.

  1. Inform your prepress operator that the file contains spot colors in the Channels panel.
  2. If you turn the visibility on for one individual channel, and turn it off for the others, this channel will display in black. This is what is needed in order to print this spot color onto its own plate.
  3. If you have named your channels according to the color formula you need, the printer should have no problem printing your image correctly.
