Add Shading
The pattern is rounded but the apple still looks a bit flat. Here are a couple of tricks to give it dimension.
- Add a new layer to the top of the stack.
- Set your foreground color to red.

New Layer and Red Foreground
- Select the Gradient tool
from the Tools panel. - In the Control panel, click on the Radial Gradient icon. Then click the dropdown triangle for the Gradient picker.
- Select the Foreground to Transparent gradient.

Foreground to Transparent Gradient
- Click in the middle of the gradient rectangle in the Control panel to open the Gradient picker. We need to switch from Foreground-to-Transparent to the reverse.
- Click on the right-hand Opacity Stop above the band of color.
- Change the Opacity from 0 to 100%.

Right-Hand Opacity Stop
- Click on the left-hand Opacity Stop above the band of color.
- Change the Opacity from 100 to 0%.
- Click OK.

Left-Hand Opacity Stop
- Ctrl+click (Mac: Cmd+click) on the layer thumbnail for the original apple shape (your second layer). This will create the selection again. Stay on the top layer.

Make the Apple Selection Again
- Position your gradient tool over the apple image, about 1/3 of the way down in the center.
- Click and drag down to the bottom edge of the apple.

Draw the Gradient

The Gradient Fill
- Set the blend mode for this top layer top Darken.
- Set the layer’s Opacity to 50%.

Blend Mode and Opacity Change
- Ctrl+D (Mac: Cmd+D) to deselect.
- Click on the apple shape layer (the second layer).
- Change the blend mode for this layer to Lighten. This lets the bright highlights on the original apple photo shine through.

Lighten Blend Mode
- Save your file.
