Add a pattern to a logo in Photoshop

The pattern is rounded but the apple still looks a bit flat. Here are a couple of tricks to give it dimension.

  1. Add a new layer to the top of the stack.
  2. Set your foreground color to red.

  1. Select the Gradient tool gradient-tool from the Tools panel.
  2. In the Control panel, click on the Radial Gradient icon. Then click the dropdown triangle for the Gradient picker.
  3. Select the Foreground to Transparent gradient.

  1. Click in the middle of the gradient rectangle in the Control panel to open the Gradient picker. We need to switch from Foreground-to-Transparent to the reverse.
  2. Click on the right-hand Opacity Stop above the band of color.
  3. Change the Opacity from 0 to 100%.

  1. Click on the left-hand Opacity Stop above the band of color.
  2. Change the Opacity from 100 to 0%.
  3. Click OK.

  1. Ctrl+click (Mac: Cmd+click) on the layer thumbnail for the original apple shape (your second layer). This will create the selection again. Stay on the top layer.

  1. Position your gradient tool over the apple image, about 1/3 of the way down in the center.
  2. Click and drag down to the bottom edge of the apple.

  1. Set the blend mode for this top layer top Darken.
  2. Set the layer’s Opacity to 50%.

  1. Ctrl+D (Mac: Cmd+D) to deselect.
  2. Click on the apple shape layer (the second layer).
  3. Change the blend mode for this layer to Lighten. This lets the bright highlights on the original apple photo shine through.
