Part Three: Draw the Carvings

Here’s where the Pen tool really comes in. Again, if you downloaded file #1, these paths are already made in the Paths panel. Skip steps 1 – 4 in that case.

Make sure that the head outline paths are not selected in the Paths panel. Click in the gray area below the head outline bar.
Select the Pen tool again, and make sure it is still set to Paths in the Control panel.
Draw lots of carved shapes around the eyes and nose.
Rename the Work Path in the Paths panel as brow and nose.

Click on the Load path as selection icon at the bottom of the Layers panel.

Duplicate the face layer by dragging it to the Create new layer icon at the bottom of the Layers panel.

Delete the layer mask from this duplicated layer by dragging it to the trash can icon.
When Photoshop asks what you would like to do, click Delete.

Create a new layer mask by clicking on the Create new layer mask icon.
Unlink the layer from its layer mask by clicking on the link icon between the two thumbnails.

Select the layer thumbnail for this layer (the one with the wood texture.
Select the Move tool.
Click and drag inside the image window to move the second wood texture over or up a bit. This gives a sense of the wood being deeper where it was carved out. The effect may be very subtle, but it necessary for realism.

To really create the carving, click on the fx icon at the bottom of the Layers panel.
Select Bevel and Emboss…

1. Size: 13
2. Angle -127

Rename this layer as nose brow.

I teach Sci Vis 1 and 2 in Greensboro, NC and the art teacher showed me your website. I think its great! I plan to have my students go to your website – especially the graffiti lesson because so many of my high school age boys are very into the art style of graffiti. Being able to take their interest and my goal of learning photoshop and combine them makes my class so much more fun to teach and learn in! Thanks for this website! – Ms. Kennedy
